Presentation Summary:
Historically, people in committed relationships have felt shame about separating. Now, they feel ashamed when they stay and their demands for equality are not met. Many of use expect fairness and reciprocity, whether or not we know anything about negotiation. We expect to be seen and known and to speak freely and authentically. These expectations create anxiety and confusion for intimate partners and other adult pairs (e.g. adult child and parent), contributing to cycles of humiliation, rage and blame. One painful outcome is an epidemic level of estrangement among families and individuals.
Dialogue Therapy was developed precisely to treat these kinds of entanglements and breaks in trust. It uniquely focuses on creating and sustaining “dialogical space” by working through intergenerational patterns, in ways that encourage and teach respect for differences and reduce hostilities.
This brief introductory presentation of Dialogue Therapy (DT) will include didactic, clinical, and experiential learning about how it addresses unconscious emotional communication and broken trust. Regardless of whether you work with couples or not, you will learn about the contribution of projective identification to couples problems and ways to work through it, including how to do so in the therapist-patient relationship.
