About the Event
Psychoanalyst Manuela Menendez and psychoanalytic candidate Daniel Sheridan will co-frame the film and lead a post-screening discussion. Drawing on their complementary perspectives, they’ll bring Freud’s enduring concepts—Id, Ego, Superego, repression, desire, the shadow self, and the death drive—into dialogue with themes often encountered in the consulting room: perfectionism, maternal enmeshment, eating disorders, and the haunting pull of twinship.
We’ll ask:
- What does Nina’s unraveling reveal about the cost of repression and the lure of perfection?
- How do blurred maternal boundaries shape her collapse?
- And what can the figure of the double teach us about rivalry, desire, and destruction?
Agenda
- 5:30 PM – Pre-Discussion: Core psychoanalytic themes to frame the viewing
- 6:00 PM – Film Screening: Black Swan in community
- 8:00 PM – Post-Discussion & Q&A: Symbolism, characters, and psychoanalytic interpretations
