SUMMARY:Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: Resistance as Communication
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Stefania Prendes-Alvarez\, MD \nThis class explores the concept of resistance in psychodynamic psychotherapy…how it manifests in the therapeutic relationship\, its many meanings\, and its role in the patient’s internal world. We will discuss ways of recognizing resistance\, understanding its defensive and adaptive functions\, and responding to it in a manner that deepens the therapeutic process.

SUMMARY:Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: Psychodynamic Supervision
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Stefania Prendes-Alvarez\, Ph.D.\, Daniel Sheridan\, Ph.D.\, Gretchen Suarez\, L.M.H.C. \nThis class provides a supervision experience for three students who will present and share clinical case material. Through discussion and guided supervision\, participants will explore how to conceptualize patient material from multiple theoretical perspectives while examining the role of psychodynamic thinking in clinical practice. The course will also emphasize how psychodynamic theory is shaped by clinicians’ theoretical orientations and by the intersubjective relationship between patient and therapist.

SUMMARY:Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: The Centrality of loss in Everyday Life and Clincal Work
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Lynne Harkless\, Sheri Ashcraft. \nLoss is a more common experience in our lives than most of us fully recognize. We experience loss not only in the death of a loved person\, but in every choice we make; in normal life transitions and changes (even desired ones); and in the inevitable experiences we all have of disappointment in others\, ourselves\, and life. No loss\, small or severe\, can be survived well without the work of mourning. Our capacity to succeed\, love\, have peace of mind\, or be vitally alive hinges on our ability to face loss and grieve. Freud spoke poignantly about loss in one of his most important papers\, Mourning and Melancholia. We will describe how Freud differentiated between mourning\, which is a painful but healthy and essential process\, and melancholia\, which is\, at its core\, a refusal to mourn\, with damaging – sometimes catastrophic – effects on the self. Issues of loss\, grief\, and the facing or avoidance of mourning thread throughout our clinical work on a daily basis.

SUMMARY:Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: Transference and Countertransference
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Patricia Gilmore\, L.M.H.C. \nThis course offers an exploration of transference and countertransference as central organizing principles in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic treatment. \nBeginning with the foundational Freudian formulation\, this course briefly traces the evolution of these concepts through contemporary schools of thought. Emphasis will be placed on how transference and countertransference are not only diagnostic and interpretive tools but also dynamic lived experiences that shape the therapeutic relationship. Students will engage with clinical material to develop the capacity to recognize\, tolerate and work through complex transference and countertransference enactments in the therapeutic dyad.
