This ongoing Listening Seminar to the Musicality in the intersubjective patient-analyst couple, focuses on the containing function of the analytic encounter through the non-verbal communicative aspects of both the patient and analyst’s inner worlds, the rhythm, cadence, primitive umbilical connection of the telephone. This seminar will teach the Kleinian technique of formulating dynamic interpretations of the patient’s inner world and its objects, through case presentations and contemporary journal and seminal analytic papers.

Francis Grier is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, a Training Analyst and Supervisor of the British Psychoanalytical Society, and a Member of Tavistock Relationships. He is also a world-renowned composer, academic musicologist, and musician. Francis Grier teaches and supervises in private practice in London, working with individuals and couples. He has a private psychoanalytic practice in London, and has succeeded Edna O’Shaughnessy in leading a seminar for psychotherapists working in the Fitzjohns Unit in the Tavistock Clinic with patients who would not normally have access to psychoanalytic treatment.

Susan N Finkelstein, LCSW is a Training analyst at the Contemporary Freudian Society and Faculty/Member of IPTAR. She developed Understanding Primitive Mental States, a study group where she teaches: The Internal World and Its Objects, The Claustro-agoraphobic Dilemma, Clinical Klein, The Not-I Patient. At the APsaA she co-chairs a discussion group with Nasir Ilahi on Schizoid Modes in Borderline and Narcissistic Patients. She is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and presents and publishes on claustro-agoraphobia. She is in private practice in NYC in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, couple therapy and clinical supervision.

Learning Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to define listening to the temperature, rhythm and tone of the patient’s non-verbal communication in the analytic session.
2) Participants will formulate Kleinian interpretations of unconscious phantasy and listening with the third ear and eye of the analytic dyad.

CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and evaluation form, participants will be granted 13.5 CE credits per session.
