Principles of Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy: For Analysts and Therapist who Practice it, and Those who Simply Won’t
Richard Zeitner, Ph.D.
August 8 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Richard Zeitner, Ph.D. will address central and cherished principles of psychoanalytic couple therapy, informed largely by object relations theories. He will demonstrate how projective identification within the intimate partnership can serve the function of the couple communication while also carrying the potential for partner difficulties. He sill also show how the tracking of these communication patterns serves as a guide for the clinician while working with the couple to overcome patterns of dysfunctional relating. Following Dr. Zeitner’s discussion, a case will be presented by Eugenio Duarte, Ph.D. to illustrate the application of these principles, all while drawing conference participants into open discussion as a clinical exercise.
Participants will be able to describe three defining characteristics of psychoanalytic couple therapy, which differentiate it from other models of couple treatment practiced in the U.S.
- Participants will be able to describe how projective identification within the partnership serves both a function of couple communication, while also potentially becoming the basis of the couple’s difficulties when presenting for treatment.
- Participants will be able to describe how being informed about psychoanalytic couple and family theory might alter one’s way of hearing material when working with individual patients..
