Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: An Introduction to the Integration of Psychoanalytic and Zen Buddhist Theory

This class offers and introduction to the integration of psychoanalytic theory and Zen Buddhist thought as applied to clinical practice. Drawing on Bion’s theoretical framework alongside Buddhist concepts of attention, non-attachment, and present-moment awareness, the class will explore how these two traditions speak to each other and how their integration can deepen and expand the clinician’s capacity for presence in the room. The instructor will share case material illustrating how this integration has formed her clinical work, and invite students to consider the ways contemplative practice might inform their own.
