Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: When Guilt and Envy Enter the Space Between

What happens when envy and guilt enter the space between patient and therapist? Drawing on the work of Bion, Steiner, Ogden, Bollas, and other contemporary object relations theorists, this class will explore how these powerful affects shape—and sometimes disrupt—the therapeutic relationship. Through rich clinical materials we will explore how these dynamics may be communicated and enacted between patient and therapist, how they shape the therapeutic experience, and how the therapist can think about and work with what emerges in the space between. Particular attention will be given to the tensions between wanting and receiving, attacking and preserving, dependence and autonomy, and guilt and reparation.
