March 6, 2021 at 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

About Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course

Co-Chairs: Stefania Prendes-Alvarez, M.D., Daniel Sheridan, Ph.D., Gretchen Suarez, L.M.H.C.

The Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course, PPC, is a two-year course designed to introduce and orient students to the major theoretical concepts of psychodynamic psychotherapy and the application of those concepts clinically. It is a robust, energetic, and accessible program that is open to mental health professionals of all disciplines, residents in psychiatry, doctoral level psychology students, predoctoral and post-doctoral interns and residents, and master’s students in psychology.

The PPC offers its participants the opportunity to:

  • Increase their theoretical knowledge and technical skill in conducting psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
  • Enhance their capacity to engage patients in therapy and deepen the therapeutic work.
  • Increase their ability to deal effectively with difficult treatment issues.
  • Enjoy stimulating discussion with colleagues.
  • Develop connections to each other and the analytic community.
  • Engage with experienced analysts and analytic clinicians.

Classes Structure:

Classes are 3 hours and are held on Saturdays from 9.00 to 12.00. There are 15 classes per year, usually meeting every other week, with 6 Saturdays in the fall and 9 in the spring. The PPC does not meet in the summer. Each class is taught by one to two different faculty members, most of whom are analysts. This diversity of teachers offers PPC students the experience of being exposed to a variety of ways different analysts understand psychoanalytic theory and practice clinically. Classes can be attended by Zoom or in person.

Curriculum and Schedule:

PPC Schedule 2023-2024

Continuing Education Credits:

CEUs and CMEs are offered for PPC classes, 3 credits per class.

Eligibility:

This program is open to mental health professionals of all disciplines including psychiatry, psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, mental health counseling, and psychiatric nursing. Students in masters or doctoral programs are also eligible to participate.

Tuition & Fees:

PPC tuition is $600 per semester or $1,200 per year. Tuition for the first semester is due at the beginning of the academic year, by September 15, and by January 5 for the second semester. Supervision fees are worked out privately between the student and supervisor. Tuition can be paid online, see below.

Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

The Florida Psychoanalytic Center offers a Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. In order to earn the Certificate, you must complete 2 years of the PPC and 50 hours of individual supervision with an approved supervisor. You must also be licensed as a mental health practitioner.

There is leeway to drop out and return to PPC Classes if needed. It is ideal for attendees to keep the continuity of their learning, if possible. This continuity enables deepening learning and cultivates a sense of safety in a cohort over time; however, in reality, it is not always possible to complete the program in the “ideal” way.  We offer rolling admissions for the same reasons. We are committed to being as flexible as possible so that we can offer the most access we can to people who wish to learn about psychoanalytic ideas.

The following is a list of approved supervisors for the PPC. You may request that a supervisor be added to the list. The potential supervisor must be approved by the Education Committee of the Institute. The supervisor can be a local or national analyst.
