Eroticism in the Maternal Matrix: Infusion through Development and the Clinical Situation. Speaker: Dianne Elise, Ph.D.

April 28, 2018 at 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

Abstract:

Dr. Dianne Elise, drawing on Kristeva’s (2014) conceptualization of maternal eroticism, will explore the “multiverse” of mother/child erotic sensibilities, as well as considering their parallel within the clinical dyad. She offers a formulation of an analytic eroticism, thus expanding the terrain of what might traditionally be viewed as erotic transference and countertransference.

Dr. Elise will emphasize analytic vitality, instead of neutrality. She shifts the metaphor of a blank screen—analyst as subdued, almost erased figure—to a more colorful image, moving analytic function from abstinence to sustenance, a quality of aliveness in the analyst that is sustaining, rather than a re-presentation of a deadened mother.

Learning Objectives:

1) Participants in this seminar will learn to compare analytic theories of the mother-infant relationship, while developing a broader repertoire of responses to patients’ material.
2) Participants in this seminar will be able to improve their approach to issues in setting and maintaining the frame of treatment from the standpoint of assessing how regular facets of each session impact a subjective sense of vitality in patients.
3) Participants in this seminar will analyze the relationship between maternal eroticism and the development of a capacity for expression of desire in a given patient, also making use of this concept to broaden an understanding of erotic transference and countertransference.
