Daniel Shaw, L.C.S.W. presents Understanding the Traumatic Narcissism Theory and its Clinical Implications

Presentation Summary:
This presentation will outline the principles of traumatic narcissism theory (TNT) and demonstrate how the theory is used in the treatment of victims of subjugation trauma. The program will highlight the value of 1) learning about the psychology and behavior of the individual described as the traumatizing narcissist (TN); 2) recognizing his/hers specific traumatizing impact on those he/she draws into his relational system of subjugation; and 3) making use of trauma-informed psychotherapeutic practices in the service of healing and recovery for his/hers victims. TNT helps victims of subjugation trauma and their therapists understand, through psychoeducation, the coercive controlling strategies of the TN, and how these behaviors induce dissociation and chronic self-negation, or self-alienation. Clinical case vignettes will demonstrate the means by which victims are helped to recognize and release themselves from the self-negation and psychological bondage that is the legacy of the TN’s abuse.
Daniel Shaw is a psychoanalytically trained, trauma-informed psychotherapist practicing in New York. His recently published book, Traumatic Narcissism Theory: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge, 2026), is an overview of his work of over thirty years with victims of traumatizing narcissists as well as with victims of traumatic abuse in cults.
