Advanced Clinical Seminar 3: Penny Freedman, Analyst

April 14, 2022 at 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

About Advanced Clinical Seminars

The Florida Psychoanalytic Center offers a group consultation program for clinicians of varying skill and experience levels who wish to learn or improve their work as psychoanalytic therapists or analysts. In these groups, analysts will offer consultation (i.e., supervisory-like feedback) to attendees who present clinical cases from their practices.

Groups will be offered for two levels of experience, an Introductory-to-Intermediate level and an Advanced level. Clinicians with any level of clinical experience and training may participate in the Introductory groups.

To be eligible for the Advanced groups, an application must be completed that will consider number of clinical hours seeing patients in outpatient psychotherapy, background in psychodynamic education, and psychodynamic individual supervision experience of the applicant.

Groups conducted by Zoom may be open to both local and long-distance clinicians, at the discretion of the facilitator.

Program Structure

Each analyst facilitating a seminar will offer live consultation to attendees who present clinical cases. The dates and time, number of participants, length of meeting, and other specifics of the group are at the discretion of the facilitator.

Networking

In addition to enhancing psychoanalytic knowledge and clinical skills, the group offers a venue for attendees to meet other analytically oriented therapists and analysts and potentially expand their collegial support networks and referral base. This collegial setting can feel vitalizing and supportive, especially given what can be the isolated nature of clinical practice.

Credit Toward PPC Supervision Requirements

For those enrolled in the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course (PPC), you may count up to 12 hours of Clinical Consultation Groups toward your 50 hour supervision requirement.

Continuing Education Credits

CEUs and CMEs are offered, 1.5 credit per group meeting.

Eligibility

These groups are open to licensed mental health professionals of all disciplines including psychiatry, psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, and mental health counseling. The groups focus on the clinical practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, so it is preferred that the participants be currently practicing outpatient psychotherapy. Two levels will be offered, and eligibility will be based on specific criteria for each:

  • Introductory-to-Intermediate Level: This group is tailored to therapists in the early to intermediate phase of their learning about and experience with practicing psychodynamic psychotherapy who are seeking to learn in a safe, encouraging, and supportive environment. Applicants who have advanced knowledge in a different clinical orientation (e.g., CBT, DBT, school counseling, etc.) are appropriate for and welcome at this level.
  • Advanced Level: This group is for therapists who have completed some amount of formal learning in psychoanalytic/psychodynamic clinical work, either through didactic training or individual supervision, and have a working knowledge of key psychoanalytic concepts (e.g., unconscious processes; transference/countertransference; defense mechanisms; dreams). Clinicians must also have at least 5000 hours of clinical experience seeing individual patients in outpatient therapy (5000 hours is roughly 20 clinical hours per week, 1000 hours per year, for 5 years). Previous experience in individual supervision and personal psychoanalytic therapy or psychoanalysis are preferred.

Beginner and Intermediate Clinical Consultation Group

Dates: February 23, 2024 – March 29, 2024

Frequency and Time: The group will meet on Fridays from 1:30 pm – 3 pm and will run for 6 consecutive weeks.

Participants: The group will have a maximum of 6 participants.

Facilitator: Gretchen Suarez, LMHC

Facilitator Bio: Gretchen is a licensed mental health counselor in private practice. Currently, she is an analyst at the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute. In addition to her clinical practice, Gretchen is recognized as a qualified supervisor by the state of Florida and provides clinical supervision and consultation for clinicians aiming to integrate a psychoanalytic approach into their patient work. Her focus is to help patients identify self-limiting patterns, heal from past experiences, and gain insight into how the unconscious mind influences their behavior.

Focus of the Group: This group is tailored to both beginner and intermediate licensed mental health clinicians interested in developing their own authentic approach to psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Throughout the six weeks, we will examine our unique perspectives regarding psychoanalytic treatment, including the frame, the consultation period, and the establishment of an analytically-oriented therapeutic alliance. We will also reflect upon the theoretical framework(s) we use in our psychoanalytic work with patients in an effort to better assess how we can develop an analytic identity that feels authentic to the clinician and deepens our work with patients. Each week, one participant will also be asked to present session material from a patient whom they have worked with in the past or are currently seeing. These case presentations will serve as an excellent opportunity to explore and discuss the multiple ways psychoanalytic therapy can be approached, as well as offer all participants the opportunity to self-reflect on the development of their professional identity.

He works with adults and specializes in trauma, grief, anxiety, and LGBTQ+ concerns. At the heart of Dan’s psychoanalytic work is the desire to help his patients live more authentically in the world, both within themselves and with others.

Beginner and Intermediate Clinical Consultation Group

Start Date: April 10, 2023- to May 15, 2023

Frequency and Time: The group will meet Mondays 6:00-7:30pm and will run for 6 consecutive weeks.

Participants: The group will have a maximum of 6 participants.

This consultation group is designed for licensed mental health clinicians who want to learn more about psychodynamic work with adults. This is a class for beginners or anyone who wants to learn more about psychoanalytic theory and practice. There will be a limit of 6 participants for this class.

Facilitator: Gennifer Lane Briggs, LCSW. Gennifer is a psychoanalyst in private practice in the North Kendall/Pinecrest area, providing psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and clinical consultation.  Her focus is adults, and she practices from an object relations, two-person perspective. She is an instructor at the Florida Psychoanalytic Center for candidates and psychotherapy students. She also supervises residents at the UM Miller School of Medicine. Gennifer is involved in CAPA, an international group which trains psychotherapists in China, where she teaches and provides analysis to students. Gennifer is also involved in The American Psychoanalytic Association, where she has served on numerous committees.

Focus of the Group: This group will use clinical material from the presenter and all participants to focus on the transference/countertransferences aspects of psychodynamic work.  The theoretical background draws from object relations and a two-person way of thinking about treatment. Transference and countertransference are where the deepest work in treatment takes place.  We will discuss identifying transference, both acknowledged and disguised.  We will also discuss the importance of countertransference as a powerful tool for understanding our patients.   Each participant will be asked to present a case during one of the sessions. Countertransference is very difficult to talk about, and our group will provide a safe space to explore these feelings.

The purpose of the group is to help clinicians focus on transference and countertransference during clinical hours.  Clinicians will be better able to see transference components disguised in manifest material, and they will develop a greater comfort level experiencing strong countertransference.

Advanced Clinical Consultation Group

Start Date:  October 12, 2022 - November 9, 2022.

Frequency and Time: The group will meet Wednesdays from 6-7:30 pm and will run for 6 consecutive weeks.

Location: The group will be held via Zoom. The first meeting (October 12) will be held in person in Coral Gables, Florida.

Facilitator: Manuela Menendez, Psy.D. is a psychoanalyst from the Florida Psychoanalytic Center and a Licensed Psychologist. She is currently in private practice in Coral Gables where she provides psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and consultation.  She teaches at the Institute at the Florida Psychoanalytic Center and the PPC program. She was adjunct faculty at the University of Miami where she taught classes to Ph.D. and Masters students. Additionally, she supervised UM counseling students at the Institute of Individual, Family, and Child at the University of Miami. In her private practice, she is particularly interested in minority experiences of isolation, trauma, and chronic illness. Apart from being trained as a psychoanalyst, she has experience and specific training working with incarcerated populations, homeless populations, the elderly population, LGBTQ and questioning, and psychodynamic consultation.

Focus of the Advanced Clinical Consultation group:

Each member of the group will have one session to present a case. The material presented will be used by the rest of the group to formulate ideas regarding attachment styles, interpersonal and intrapsychic dynamics. We will also look at the patient's character,  their typical defensive strategies, and their resistance patterns. We will use the information to predict transferential and countertransferential dynamics.  We will hypothesize potential enactments and ruptures between the clinician and the patient.  The purpose of the consultation group is to help us hone our abilities in determining, within the first few sessions of meeting a patient, what we can potentially expect through the course of their treatment. It will also give us data on the patient that we can use to determine if they have changed over time.

Beginner and Intermediate Clinical Consultation Group

Start Date: January 20, 2023 - February 24, 2023.

Frequency and Time: The group will meet Fridays from 11-12:30 pm and will run for 6 consecutive weeks (1/20, 1/27, 2/03, 2/10, 2/17, and 2/24).

Facilitator: Alessandra Barroso, L,M.H.C.

Alessandra Barroso, L.M.H.C. is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Broward County, Florida, offering psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy to adults as well as children and adolescents, and consultation to parents. She completed her psychoanalytic training at Fortaleza Psychoanalytic Society (SPFor) in Brazil, an Interim Society of the International Psychoanalytic Association – IPA. She is author of “The boy and the paper: reflections about challenges and achievements in the psychoanalytical work with a psychotic adolescent” and “Agreeing without thinking: attacks on links.” She serves on the faculty of Florida Psychoanalytic Institute and the PPC Program in Miami. She is also on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Society of Fortaleza, in Brazil. She has special interests in Object Relations, Bion and Post-Bionian Theory, and specific training working with early and developmental trauma.

Focus of the Consultation group:

This case consultation group will offer a safe and confidential atmosphere for psychotherapists who wish to get help with clinical challenges or sharpen their clinical skills from an Object Relations psychoanalytic perspective.

In each session a participant will present a case and the material presented will be used by the rest of the group to formulate reflections regarding the psychic struggles of the patient and the dynamics of the psychoanalytic field. We will work together to explore the symbolic use of the frame, the interpersonal and intrapsychic dynamics present in the dyad, the transferential and contratransferencial aspects of the relationship, and deepen our understanding regarding how each of these elements impact the analytic process. The group will also be invited to examine potential defensive mechanisms, resistance patterns, impasses, enactments, and projective and introjective identifications.

The purpose of the consultation group is to assist clinicians to develop and honing clinical skills and techniques to help them recognize elements that can promote positive changes in the patient as well as to identify potential issues that might emerge within the working field that can harm the psychotherapeutic progress or even lead to ruptures between the therapist and the patient.
