Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: When Less in More: Working From Reverie and the Power of the Brief Intervention

This class explores the clinical power of restraint – of doing more by saying less. Rather than intervening with questions or synthesizing commentary, the therapist attends more closely to internal states and feee-flowing reverie, allowing words to come from a place of inspiration rather then effort. What emerges is naturally briefer – less about organizing what the patient has said and more about pressing a finger on what is most alive in the room. This approach requires tolerance for uncertainty and trust in the patient’s capacity to hear below the surface of words. Students will be invited to examine moments in their own work where less might have opened more.
