Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course: Analytic Listening: Hearing What the Patient Isn’t Saying

This class introduces students to the clinical stance of psychodynamic listening-evenly suspended attention, tracking affect versus content, and listening below the surface of what the patient presents. Moving from Year 1’s theoretical foundations into Year 2’s focus on technique, the class will explore what it means to use oneself as a clinical instrument and how to cultivate the kind of listening that allows the unconscious to become audible. Clinical vignettes and student case material will be central to the discussion.
