In 1993, the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute was accredited by the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) as one of the more than thirty constituent institutes which conduct psychoanalytic training. The Florida Psychoanalytic Institute (FPI) educates qualified professionals to become psychoanalysts through a program which entails:

(1) personal analysis with a training analyst

(2) course work : an academic program of five years of part time classes and seminars taught by Institute faculty, and

(3) supervision of a Candidate’s own analytic work by supervising analysts.

The American Medical Association provides continuing medical education credits for Candidates who are physicians. Continuing Education credits for Candidates who are psychologists, social workers, or other mental health professionals may be available.

The Florida Psychoanalytic Society (FPS) was incorporated in 1966 and accepted by the APsaA as an affiliate society in 1967. It offers collegial activities and scientific programs for its members and adjunct members and scientific programs and activities for other interested members of the community. In addition, the Society and Institute offer a two year Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course. The Florida Psychoanalytic Society is accredited by the appropriate regulatory agencies to provide continuing education credits for physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, and other mental health professionals.

The Florida Psychoanalytic Foundation, incorporated in 1987, is a fund-raising organization which provides support for the Institute and Society and qualified activities and research projects of members.

The Florida Psychoanalytic Institute, Society and Foundation maintain an office, an extensive psychoanalytic library, and a classroom at 420 South Dixie , Suite 2F, Miami, Florida 33146.

All three are nonprofit corporations and share common goals:

  • To provide training in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, in accordance with the standards for such training , as established by the American Psychoanalytic Association.

  • To establish and maintain accredited educational organizations in the field of psychoanalysis

  • To promote research in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis.

  • To provide opportunities for professional growth and collegial activities

  • To foster the dissemination of psychoanalytic knowledge and the integration of psychoanalysis with allied fields and professions

  • To facilitate the availability of affordable psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy to the community
