Community Connections

A HOME WITHIN
A Home Within
is the only national, nonprofit organization focused exclusively on the
emotional needs of foster children and youth. There are currently 510,000
children in foster care across the United States. The Florida Psychoanalytic
Society has partnered with the Miami chapter of A Home Within
to offer pro bono psychotherapy to children in foster care.
A positive connection to a caring adult is vital to the healthy development
of every child. A Home Within offers a unique
approach to the mental health needs of foster children. Through the simple
formula, “One child. One therapist. For as long as it takes”,
pro bono psychotherapy is offered to current and former foster youth. This
simple, yet very powerful guiding principle attracts clinicians who want
to give to their communities in a meaningful way. Using a private practice
model, children are seen in their therapist's office in weekly psychotherapy,
until treatment comes to a natural close. Each therapist takes responsibility
for collaborative work with the child or adolescent's caregivers, teachers
and social workers, as the need arises.
Volunteer clinicians have access to ongoing education and training, an expanded
referral base and a network of colleagues.
Working with A Home Within gives the clinician
the opportunity to truly change a foster child’s life. Often times,
it is the only stable relationship a child will have ever known. Clinicians
can feel confident that, because of their work, vulnerable children will
receive the care they deserve.
