ADMISSION TO THE TRAINING PROGRAM TO BECOME A PSYCHOANALYST

The requirements for application and acceptance are described below.

WHO MAY STUDY TO BECOME A PSYCHOANALYST? •  Application Applications are accepted from physicians, doctoral level psychologists, social workers, and other mental health practitioners. Applicants must have had significant clinical experience. However, in some instances, outstandingly qualified scholar-researchers, educators, and selected other professionals may also be approved for psychoanalytic training for the purpose of enhancing work in their selected fields . These individuals are through the Committee on Research and Special Training of the American Psychoanalytic Association. There are some additional special categories. The program for psychoanalytic training is briefly described on this site under Psychoanalytic Training and more fully   described in the Bulletin of the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute. We will be glad to send you a copy of the Bulletin which outlines the course offerings, requirements for admission, tuition charges, etc.

•  Acceptance

Applications are processed by the Admissions Subcommittee. Individuals seeking admission to an institute of the American Psychoanalytic Association must have an advanced degree--an M.D., a doctorate in psychology, or other advanced clinical degree, and must meet high ethical, psychological, and professional standards.. They usually will have had practical experience in the mental health field. The application process includes consideration of recommendations from previous teachers, supervisors, and colleagues with whom they have had professional contact. Applicants are customarily interviewed in depth by three members of the Faculty. All application materials and reports are presented to the Admissions Subcommittee, which, in turn, presents recommendations concerning applications to the Education Committee. Notification of the decision of the Education Committee is subsequently made to the applicant.
